ACDSee Picture Viewer - This one really picks up the pace when it comes to opening bmps, jpegs and gifs. Comes with a picture browser ideal for viewing a large number of pictures in a particular directory. Can be downloaded from www.acdsystems.com/products/acdsee/ . File size - 4040KB (Shareware - I think a 30 day trial)
Audiograbber - A quite good mp3 software which can be used in conjunction with Blade Enc to create mp3 files. Blade Enc is freeware and can be downloaded from http://bladeenc.home.ml.org. It is freeware and is not much in size. The most useful function of audiograbber besides the normal ones is that it can be used to normalize (equalise the default volume) wav files before converting to mp3 format which means no more problems of the default volume being too high or too low. I have audiograbber v1.5 and it normalizes quite properly but I found that when I installed the newer v1.6 it gave an error message saying wav format is not 8-bit PCI or something like that. V1.5 could normalize the same file without any problem. Must be because I have a lot of such software and one of them must be interfering creating the problem. You can download Audiograbber from www.audiograbber.com-us.net. File size - 1105KB (Shareware-Selects randomly half the songs on a cd and only these can be converted)
Cookie crusher - A really good software for crushing cookies. Does not allow cookies to get stored on the hard disk and has a quite informative session history. Can be automatically opened when ie or netscape is opened. Names of cookies which are to be accepted can also be given. Can be downloaded from www.thelimitsoft.com . File size - not much. (shareware - 30 day trial)
Jet audio - One of the best all-in-one players available. Has some superb effects for mp3s such as 3D, reverb and wide as well as special effects such as flange, dry, pitch change and a few more. Compatible with a large no of file types such as mp3, wav, mid, ra, mov and so on. Newest version includes Real Player G2 support. Also has a audio and video CD mode. Can be downloaded from www.cowon.com. File size - over 7MB (quite large!) (Shareware-30 day trial)
Naviscope - A really good internet software (proxy server) which can be used to block ads and prefetch pages. Does improve speed and more importantly removes those pesky ads. Provides a lot of information regarding transfer of data to and from the net and also has additional functions such as keeping time and displaying memory resources. Can be downloaded from www.naviscope.com. File size - not sure (freeware)
Protector Plus - A really small anti-virus software. Works okay (does detect viruses, I can tell you that). But until now the viruses it detected were all harmless word macros on floppies (I am saying this from the description of the viruses from various anti-virus sites). So I dont really know whether it can deal with the more nasty ones. I have Mcafee to deal with those but thankfully I have been spared the trouble till now. Can be downloaded from www.pspl.com.Virus definition files are updated regularly at the site and interestingly are as big as the software itself! File size - 1MB (can you believe it!) (shareware-30 day trial)
Talking e-mail - Reads out your e-mail and clipboard contents. Different characters and voices can be downloaded. Characters show animation. Can be downloaded from www.4dev.com . File size - 5.5MB(shareware - multiple characters not supported and some other limitations)
