My views on astrology

Astrology is something which evokes wide-ranging responses from everyone. Some shun it, some laugh at it while others are quite interested. I have been learning astrology since the past four years and I do hold the view that there is something in it. I have concentrated on the nature analysing part of astrology and not dwelled much on the future prediction part.

There are a lot of misconceptions on astrology I have come across. Many people dismiss astrology as they feel it is some future predicting hocus-pocus. Well, first of all I would like to say that astrology is not primarily meant for future prediction at all. Its primary aim is to analyse the natures of persons. What astrology says is that persons born at the same time in the same place will have a remarkably similar nature. However this nature is subject to modifications from the environment and the inherited genes. It may be considered as an example that astrology can tell you the exact type of clay used to make a pot along with all its constituents but the shape of the pot will depend on the potter (environment).

Due to its nature analysing ability, astrology can also give indications about the future. It is important to know that astrology does not predict the future nor does it claim to do so. It only gives indications so that we may be forewarned. Personally, I feel accurate future prediction is impossible due to the large number of variables involved. It is much more difficult than predicting the weather due to its inherently chaotic nature. But indications can be given as with the weather. Here I do not speak about horary astrology as it is a different branch and I have not had time to study it.

Please remember that I too am relatively a beginner in astrology though I have read the charts of a few friends of mine recently. Knowledge in astrology is almost synonymous with experience, which I do lack. The important thing to remember in astrology is never to take a chart at face value. This is where many astrological sites and software completely fail as they give you a mechanical description of your chart. The problem however is that invariably in any chart there are contradictions. At one point it may be specified that the native is a miser, at another a spendthrift. It finally depends on which planet's influence is stronger. That planet then cancels out the effect of the other. The planet, which is overruled, however does lessen the characteristic in the native. A lot of subtraction and addition has to be carried out when reading a chart which can come only by practice. It is people who take a chart at face value who may say that astrology just gives characteristics which can describe any person. But if they get their chart interpreted by an astrologer they will realise their mistake. I may be a little off the mark as far as the interpretation is concerned due to my lack of experience but I am sure that enough will be accurate. I also feel that for a student of astrology it is very important to read the chart of persons he/she has never met. With someone known there are biases introduced. Also interpreting becomes a lot easier as one has a general idea about the nature of the person. Hence reading an unknown person's chart gives a lot more practice as one has to double-check everything.
